Mark Kenedy Rocas embarked on his musical journey at the age of nine. From his early years, Rocas’ talent propelled him to join prestigious music ensembles across the Philippines, including the Philippine Youth Symphonic Band and the Manila Symphony Orchestra. He further enriched his musical prowess by participating in masterclasses conducted by renowned international artists such as Daniel Agi, Christoph Bosh, and Viviana Guzman.
Rocas’ achievements continued to flourish as he clinched the first prize at the National Music Competition for Young Artists in 2017 and graced the stage as a soloist with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. His passion for music also led him to represent the Philippines at international music conferences.
Currently pursuing a Master of Music in Flute Performance under the tutelage of world-renowned flutist Sooyun Kim at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, Mark Kenedy Rocas continues to captivate audiences with his heartfelt interpretations and virtuosic performances. His music, often compared to the gentle flow of water, transcends boundaries, evoking a myriad of emotions and leaving an indelible mark on all who listen.
Artist Statement
I am Mark Kenedy Rocas, a Filipino musician, a flutist, and an educator. I'm a thoughtful, modest, and kid-like person. These personalities help me a lot in a good way as an artist to show and share my ideas through playing my flute. It connects me as a musician and a performer to convey what composers want to express and happen in music.
Growing up with limited access to toys instilled in me the impression that playing flute is like playing a video game, it provides with the notion of keep playing and there is always a next level after one. It improves my concentration, memory and my creativity.
People define my sound, my music like a relaxing flowing water. It’s delightful and captivating for listeners and brings the audiences into different kinds of world and fantasy. And others say I am exhibiting liveliness and vigor in musical performances, able to perform and adapt to various styles.
In making artistic decisions in music, I based on the style, composer and genre. I have my own interpretation and touch in music but should not disturb what composers want to express. I choose repertoire depending on the audience, place, and events. I write and send an email to some venues, patrons, organizations, and create posters for people to come and watch.
My ideal career is to be a soloist, an orchestra musician and a flute professor in the next 5 to 15 years and even more. I want to contribute the character and talents in expressing deep emotion and passion in music of the Filipinos to the world.
Teaching Statement
I aim to be a vessel of mastery and awareness, not only in flute playing but also as a musician in general. My teaching goal is to elevate the students' knowledge with a method that will cater to what is best and fit the students. As a teacher, I want to teach them how to be independent, enabling them to derive enjoyment, explore, and have a lightbulb moment not only in music but to relate and give them ample meaning of life. I create an engaging and learning environment by actively listening and forming genuine connections with the students. I integrate physical stretching to relax and release tension to ensure a well-rounded learning experience.
